Gossip is a sin against truth and justice, often categorized as detraction (revealing faults without good reason) or calumny (spreading falsehoods), which damages reputations and misleads others. It violates the Eighth Commandment by injuring a person’s good name, which the Catechism treats as a grave matter, especially when done with full knowledge and intent to harm.
