The Ark of the Covenant was the sacred chest constructed at God’s command during the time of Moses as the holiest object of Israel’s worship. Made of incorruptible wood and overlaid with pure gold, the Ark contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod, and a vessel of manna. Above it rested the mercy seat with two golden cherubim, where God manifested His presence among His people.
The Ark accompanied Israel throughout the wilderness, during battles, and into the Promised Land, serving as a visible sign of God’s covenant and protection. When carried faithfully, it brought victory and blessing; when treated irreverently, it brought judgment. The Ark was eventually placed within the Holy of Holies in Solomon’s Temple, where only the high priest could approach it once each year.
The Ark foreshadows the Blessed Virgin Mary, who bore within her womb Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of the Law and the true Bread from Heaven.
