The Temple of Solomon, also called the First Temple, was the holy sanctuary built in Jerusalem by King Solomon as the permanent dwelling place for the worship of the God of Israel. Constructed according to the plans entrusted by God, the Temple replaced the Tabernacle that had accompanied Israel through the wilderness. Within its innermost chamber, the Holy of Holies, rested the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred sign of God’s presence among His people.
The Temple became the center of sacrifice, prayer, and worship for Israel, where priests offered continual sacrifices according to the Law of Moses. At its dedication, the glory of the Lord filled the sanctuary so powerfully that the priests could not stand to minister. Throughout Israel’s history, the Temple symbolized God’s covenant with His people, though periods of idolatry and sin eventually brought divine judgment upon the nation.
The Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians during the reign of Nabuchodonosor, fulfilling the warnings of the prophets. Its memory remained central to Jewish worship and expectation throughout the centuries.
