St. John the Baptist was the prophet chosen by God to prepare the way for Jesus Christ. Born miraculously to Zachary and Elizabeth, John lived a life of prayer, fasting, and repentance in the wilderness, calling the people of Israel to conversion and baptizing in the Jordan River. He boldly proclaimed the coming of the Messiah, declaring himself the “voice of one crying in the wilderness.”
John recognized Jesus as the Lamb of God and baptized Him in the Jordan, witnessing the Holy Ghost descend upon Christ. Fearless in preaching truth, John rebuked King Herod for his unlawful marriage to Herodias. Because of this, he was imprisoned and eventually condemned to death. At the request of Herodias’ daughter, John was beheaded, becoming a martyr for righteousness and truth.
Christ Himself praised John as one of the greatest born among men. His life and martyrdom remain a powerful witness to humility, courage, repentance, and unwavering fidelity to God.
