St. James the Greater, brother of Saint John the Apostle, was one of the twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ. Along with his brother, James was given the title “Son of Thunder” by Christ, reflecting his fiery zeal and passionate spirit. He belonged to the inner circle of disciples who witnessed major events in Christ’s ministry, including the Transfiguration and the agony in Gethsemane.
James left behind his life as a fisherman to follow Christ without hesitation. He preached the Gospel boldly after the Resurrection and became one of the foremost leaders of the early Church. Tradition holds that he later preached in Spain before returning to Jerusalem.
Because of his fearless proclamation of the faith, James became the first Apostle to suffer martyrdom. King Herod Agrippa ordered his execution by the sword, making James a powerful witness to courage, devotion, and unwavering loyalty to Christ.
