Saint Anthony of Padua was a Franciscan priest, preacher, and Doctor of the Church renowned for his deep knowledge of Scripture and powerful preaching. Born in Portugal as Fernando Martins de Bulhões, he initially entered religious life with the Augustinians before joining the Franciscan Order, inspired by the witness of Franciscan martyrs.
Anthony became one of the most effective preachers of his age, traveling throughout Europe to teach the faith, defend Catholic doctrine, and call sinners to repentance. His sermons were known for their clarity, wisdom, and profound understanding of Sacred Scripture. He also devoted himself to the poor and worked tirelessly to reconcile those who were divided.
Because of numerous accounts of answered prayers through his intercession, Saint Anthony became especially associated with finding lost items and helping those who seek God’s guidance. His holiness, humility, and devotion to Christ made him one of the most beloved saints in the Church.
