The Torah

Card Type: Enhancement | Timeline: Old Testament
Overview:

The Torah is the foundational law and teaching given by God to His people through Moses. The word Torah is often translated as “law,” but it more broadly signifies instruction, guidance, and divine teaching. It consists of the first five books of Sacred Scripture—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy—which recount creation, the covenant with Abraham, the Exodus from Egypt, and the laws that governed the life of Israel.

At Mount Sinai, God entered into a covenant with His people and gave them His commandments, including the Ten Commandments, as a guide for holy living. The Torah revealed God’s will, taught Israel how to worship Him, and established principles of justice, mercy, and faithfulness. It served as the spiritual and moral foundation of the covenant community.

Throughout the Old Testament, the Torah is presented as a gift from God rather than a burden. Those who meditate upon it and follow its teachings are described as blessed and wise. In Christian understanding, the Torah prepares the way for Jesus Christ, who fulfills the Law and reveals its deepest meaning.
