The Psalms are a collection of sacred songs, prayers, and hymns that express the full range of the human relationship with God. Traditionally associated with King David, though composed by several inspired authors, the Psalms include prayers of praise, thanksgiving, repentance, trust, lament, and worship. They were used in the worship of Israel and continue to be central to Christian prayer and liturgy.
The Psalms teach believers how to pray in times of joy and sorrow, victory and suffering. Many contain prophecies and themes that Christians understand as pointing to the coming of the Messiah. Through their poetry and devotion, the Psalms reveal God’s faithfulness, mercy, justice, and kingship.
