Mary of Bethany was the sister of Martha and Lazarus and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. She is especially remembered for sitting at the Lord’s feet and listening to His teaching while her sister Martha was occupied with many tasks. Jesus commended Mary’s choice to focus on what was spiritually most important (Luke 10:38–42).
Mary was also present when Jesus raised her brother Lazarus from the dead, expressing her faith in Him during a time of grief (John 11:1–44). Shortly before the Passion, she anointed Jesus with costly perfume as an act of love and devotion, preparing Him for His burial (John 12:1–8).
Mary of Bethany is honored as a model of contemplation, discipleship, and loving devotion to Christ.
