Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian friar who renounced wealth to live in radical simplicity, poverty, and devotion to Jesus Christ. Inspired by the Gospel, he embraced a life of humility and service, preaching repentance and peace while caring for the poor and sick.
He is well known for his deep love of creation, seeing all creatures as part of God’s family. One of the most famous traditions about Francis is his preaching to the birds, reflecting his belief that all creation praises God. He also founded the Franciscan Order, which spread his message of simplicity and Gospel living throughout the world.
Francis received the stigmata later in life, becoming a powerful witness to Christ’s Passion. He is remembered as a model of humility, joy, and radical discipleship.
