Saint Teresa of Ávila was a Spanish Carmelite nun, reformer, and mystic who became one of the greatest spiritual teachers in Christian history. Deeply devoted to prayer, she worked to renew religious life within the Carmelite Order, emphasizing simplicity, discipline, and a closer relationship with God.
Through her spiritual writings, Teresa taught that prayer is a journey of growing friendship with God. Her most influential works, including The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection, describe the soul’s progress toward deeper union with the Lord. Despite opposition and many challenges, she persevered in her mission of reform and founded numerous reformed Carmelite communities.
Recognized for her profound wisdom and holiness, Teresa was later named a Doctor of the Church, an honor given to saints whose teachings have made an exceptional contribution to Christian doctrine and spirituality.
