Saint Thomas Becket was the Archbishop of Canterbury in twelfth-century England and a steadfast defender of the Church’s freedom. Initially a close friend and advisor to King Henry II, Becket underwent a profound transformation after becoming archbishop, dedicating himself to protecting the rights of the Church against royal interference. Conflict arose when he opposed the king’s attempts to control ecclesiastical matters. Despite threats, exile, and mounting pressure, Becket remained firm in his convictions. Upon returning to England, he continued to defend the Church’s independence and was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 by knights who believed they were acting on the king’s wishes. His martyrdom quickly inspired widespread devotion and made him a symbol of courage and fidelity to God.
St. Thomas Becket was canonized on February 21, 1173 by Pope Alexander III.
