Saint Cyril of Alexandria was one of the most influential theologians and bishops of the early Church. Serving as Patriarch of Alexandria in the fifth century, he became a leading defender of Christian doctrine, especially concerning the person of Jesus Christ. Cyril taught that Jesus is one divine Person who possesses both a fully divine and fully human nature.
He is best known for his role in the Council of Ephesus, where he defended the title Theotokos (“God-bearer” or “Mother of God”) for the Blessed Virgin Mary, affirming the true divinity of Christ. His writings and teachings played a major role in shaping Christian theology and safeguarding orthodox belief.
Because of his profound theological contributions, Cyril is honored as one of the great Fathers and Doctors of the Church. His life reflects a deep commitment to defending the truth of the Gospel and preserving the unity of the faith.
St. Cyril (along with his brother St. Methodius) was canonized by Pope Leo XIII on September 30, 1880. Later, in 1980, Pope John Paul II declared the brothers co-patrons of Europe
