Pope Saint Leo the Great was Bishop of Rome in the fifth century and one of the most influential popes in early Church history. He is best known for his strong leadership in defending orthodox Christian doctrine, especially regarding the nature of Christ. At the Council of Chalcedon, his famous Tome of Leo helped clarify that Jesus Christ is one Person with two natures, fully divine and fully human.
Leo was also a skilled pastor and administrator who strengthened the unity of the Church during times of political instability and external threats. One of the most famous traditions about him recounts his meeting with Attila the Hun, where his diplomatic intervention is said to have helped spare Rome from destruction.
Because of his theological clarity and leadership, Leo is honored as one of the great Doctors of the Church and a model of papal authority and pastoral care.
Pope Benedict XIV officially declared Pope St. Leo the Great a Doctor of the Church.
