Pope Saint Gregory the Great was Bishop of Rome from 590 to 604 and one of the most influential leaders in the history of the Church. He is known for strengthening papal authority, reforming Church administration, and promoting pastoral care centered on humility and service. Gregory also played a major role in organizing liturgical life, and the tradition of Gregorian Chant is associated with his influence on Church worship.
Before becoming pope, Gregory lived as a monk and carried that monastic spirit into his papal ministry. He emphasized care for the poor, evangelization, and the spiritual formation of clergy. He also sent missionaries, including Saint Augustine of Canterbury, to evangelize England, helping spread Christianity across Europe.
Gregory is honored as one of the great Doctors of the Church and is remembered as a model of servant leadership and pastoral wisdom.
