Saint Athanasius was a fourth-century bishop of Alexandria and one of the greatest defenders of Christian orthodoxy. As a deacon, he participated in the First Council of Nicaea, which affirmed the full divinity of Jesus Christ against Arianism. Later, as Patriarch of Alexandria, Athanasius spent much of his life defending this teaching despite intense opposition.
Because of his unwavering commitment to the truth, Athanasius endured multiple exiles and years of hardship. Nevertheless, he continued to write, preach, and guide the faithful. His influential work On the Incarnation remains one of the most important texts in Christian theology, explaining why God became man in Jesus Christ.
Athanasius is remembered as a courageous shepherd, theologian, and Doctor of the Church whose faithfulness helped preserve the doctrine of Christ’s divinity for future generations.
St. Athanasius was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1568 by Pope St. Pius V.
