Holy House of Loreto

Card Type: Sacred Place | Timeline: Church Tradition
Overview:

The Holy House of Loreto is one of the most renowned Marian shrines in Christianity. Located in the town of Loreto, Italy, it is traditionally believed to be the house in Nazareth where the Blessed Virgin Mary received the Annunciation and where the Holy Family lived.

According to longstanding tradition, the house was miraculously preserved and eventually brought to Loreto. Regardless of differing historical explanations concerning its transfer, the shrine has been a major destination for Christian pilgrims for centuries. The house is enclosed within the magnificent basilica that was built to protect and honor it.

The Holy House of Loreto serves as a powerful reminder of the mystery of the Incarnation, when the Word became flesh and dwelt among humanity. Pilgrims visit the shrine to reflect on Mary’s fiat, the hidden life of Jesus, and God’s entrance into human history.
