Saint Justin Martyr was a second-century Christian philosopher, apologist, and martyr who devoted his life to explaining and defending the Christian faith. Born into a pagan family, Justin studied various philosophical schools before embracing Christianity, which he came to regard as the fulfillment of humanity’s search for truth.
Justin used his philosophical training to engage with both pagan thinkers and Roman authorities, writing works that defended Christians against false accusations and explained Christian beliefs and worship. His writings provide some of the earliest detailed descriptions of the celebration of the Eucharist and Sunday worship in the early Church.
Because of his public witness to Christ, Justin was eventually arrested and brought before Roman officials. When ordered to renounce his faith, he refused and was executed around the middle of the second century. His courage, intellectual rigor, and fidelity to Christ earned him the title “Martyr.”
