Saint Cosmas was an early Christian physician and martyr who is traditionally honored together with his brother, Saint Damian. According to ancient Christian tradition, the two brothers practiced medicine without accepting payment, earning them the title Anargyroi (“the silverless” or “those who take no money”). They viewed their medical work as a ministry of charity and an opportunity to bear witness to Christ.
Through their care for the sick and their proclamation of the Gospel, Cosmas and Damian gained a reputation for compassion, generosity, and faith. During a period of persecution, they were arrested for their Christian beliefs and ultimately suffered martyrdom rather than renounce Christ.
Saint Cosmas is remembered as a model of selfless service, combining professional skill with Christian charity. His witness has inspired generations of healthcare workers to see their vocation as a means of serving both God and neighbor.
