The Sancta Camisa (“Holy Tunic”) is one of the most treasured relics preserved at Chartres Cathedral. According to a long-standing Christian tradition, it is the garment worn by the Blessed Virgin Mary at the time of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Tradition holds that the relic was brought from the East to the West and was eventually entrusted to the cathedral at Chartres, where it has been venerated for centuries. The Sancta Camisa became especially associated with the cathedral after it was preserved during the devastating fire of 1194. Its survival was regarded by many as a sign of God’s providence and inspired the rebuilding of Chartres Cathedral, one of the greatest masterpieces of Gothic architecture.
For Christians, the Sancta Camisa is honored not because of the fabric itself, but because of its association with the Mother of God and the mystery of the Incarnation. The relic serves as a reminder of Mary’s humble cooperation with God’s plan of salvation and the birth of Jesus Christ.
