Saint Ignatius of Antioch was an early Christian bishop, martyr, and Apostolic Father who lived during the late first and early second centuries. He served as Bishop of Antioch, one of the most important centers of early Christianity, and is traditionally believed to have been a disciple of the Apostles, particularly Saint John the Apostle.
Ignatius is best known for a series of letters he wrote while being escorted to Rome for execution. In these letters, he encouraged Christians to remain united in faith, to stay faithful to their bishops, and to persevere through persecution. His writings provide some of the earliest and clearest testimony to the structure of the Church, the importance of the Eucharist, and the reality of Christ’s incarnation.
Facing martyrdom with remarkable courage, Ignatius expressed his desire to remain faithful to Christ until death. According to tradition, he was executed in Rome during the reign of Emperor Trajan, becoming one of the most celebrated martyrs of the early Church.
