Saint Longinus is the traditional name given to the Roman centurion or soldier associated with the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. According to Christian tradition, he is often identified as the soldier who pierced Jesus’ side with a spear after His death on the Cross. While the New Testament does not record his name, tradition remembers him as a witness to the Passion who came to faith in Christ.
The Gospels record that a centurion present at the Crucifixion recognized the innocence and divine identity of Jesus, declaring, “Truly this was the Son of God.” Christian tradition associates this profession of faith with Longinus and holds that he later became a believer, devoted himself to Christ, and ultimately suffered martyrdom.
Longinus is remembered as a powerful example of conversion, demonstrating how an encounter with Christ can transform even those who once participated in His suffering. His story emphasizes repentance, faith, and the saving power of the Cross.
