Abel, son of Adam

Card Type: Martyr | Timeline: Old Testament
Overview:

Abel was the second son of Adam and Eve, our first parents. He was a keeper of sheep, and when he brought forth an offering to the lord from his flock, he gave the very best sheep and the fattest portions. This was pleasing to God. His older brother Cain, however, who was a farmer, brought an offering from his harvests that was not of the highest quality as he kept the best for himself. This displeased God, which made Cain angry and jealous of his younger brother. In his wrath, he took Abel out to a field and viciously murdered him. This story emphasizes how God delights in those who draw close to him, but how those who allow sin to lurk at their door are in peril of the most unspeakable evil. In the book of Hebrews it says, “By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he received approval as righteous, God bearing witness by accepting his gifts; he died, but through his faith he is still speaking.” (Heb 11:4) Abel’s righteousness and giving of his life for the glory of God points us directly to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
