St. Dominic de Guzmán

Card Type: Intercessor | Timeline: Church Tradition
Overview:

St. Dominic de Guzmán was a Spanish priest who founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) to combat heresy and spread the Gospel. Born in 1170 in Caleruega, Spain, Dominic was known for his compassion and zeal for truth. His mother had a vision in a dream in which she gave birth to a dog which leaped from her womb holding a flaming torch in its mouth. The dog ran throughout the world setting it on fire. She was disturbed by the dream and went to the Benedictine monastery where they interpreted the dream as a premonition of her child becoming a great preacher. During his mission in southern France, he encountered the Albigensian heresy, which denied the goodness of creation and the Incarnation. Despite tireless efforts, conversions were few, and Dominic turned to intense prayer and penance. According to tradition, in 1208, while praying in a forest near Toulouse, Dominic received a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She appeared holding a rosary and said, “Preach my Psalter,” referring to 150 Hail Mary prayers modeled after the Psalms. Mary taught him that meditating on the mysteries of Christ’s life, combined with vocal prayer would be a powerful weapon against error and sin. Dominic embraced this heavenly gift and began preaching the Rosary as a means of conversion and spiritual renewal. Through this devotion, which remains a central practice of Catholics to this day, many hardened hearts softened, and faith was restored.
