Card Type: Intercessor | Timeline: Church Tradition
Overview:

St. Maria Faustina Kowalska is known as the “Apostle of Divine Mercy.” She was a Polish nun whose mystical experiences and writings profoundly impacted Catholic spirituality. Born Helena Kowalska in 1905 in Głogowiec, Poland, she grew up in a poor but devout family and felt called to religious life from an early age. At 20, after a vision of the suffering Christ, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, taking the name Sister Maria Faustina. Her life in the convent was humble. She worked as a cook, gardener, and porter, but she was spiritually extraordinary. Jesus appeared to her multiple times, entrusting her with the mission of proclaiming His infinite mercy to the world. In 1931, she received the vision of the Divine Mercy image, portraying Christ with rays of red and pale light emanating from His heart, accompanied by the words “Jesus, I trust in You.” She recorded these revelations in her famous Diary, which emphasizes trust in God and mercy toward others. Faustina introduced devotions such as the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Hour of Mercy (3 p.m.), and the Feast of Divine Mercy (the Sunday after Easter). Despite suffering from tuberculosis, she remained devoted to her mission until her death in 1938 at age 33. Canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, her message continues to inspire millions worldwide.
