Intemperance is the lack of self-control, particularly regarding bodily appetites and passions, leading to excessive indulgence in pleasures like food, drink, and sex, thereby enslaving reason to the senses and hindering spiritual growth. It’s a failure to moderate desires, turning good things like eating or recreation into sinful excess and making one a slave to disordered cravings, rather than a master of them.
