Jeremiah was one of the major prophets of the Old Testament, chosen by God to warn the kingdom of Judah of coming judgment because of its idolatry and disobedience. Called to prophecy while still young, Jeremiah faithfully proclaimed God’s message despite rejection, persecution, and imprisonment. Because of his sorrow over the sins and destruction of his people, he is often called the “Weeping Prophet.”
Jeremiah warned that Jerusalem and the Temple would fall if the people refused to repent. Though many mocked him and ignored his warnings, his prophecies were fulfilled when Babylon conquered Jerusalem and carried the people into exile. Even amid judgment, Jeremiah proclaimed hope, foretelling a new covenant written upon the hearts of God’s people.
Tradition holds that Jeremiah continued to guide and encourage the faithful during the exile. His courage, perseverance, and faithfulness in suffering made him a powerful witness to obedience and trust in God during times of national disaster and spiritual corruption.
