“Be fruitful and multiply” is the blessing and command first given by God to humanity at the dawn of creation. After creating man and woman in His image and likeness, God blessed them and commanded them to fill the earth, establishing marriage, family, and the continuation of human life as part of His divine plan. This blessing revealed the goodness of creation and humanity’s role as stewards over the earth.
The command was later repeated to Noah and his family after the flood, symbolizing renewal, hope, and the restoration of mankind following divine judgment. Throughout the Old Testament, fruitfulness was often regarded as a sign of God’s favor and covenant blessing.
Within Christian understanding, the command also points toward spiritual fruitfulness through faith, holiness, and the spreading of God’s people throughout the world.
Genesis 1:27–28
God creates man and woman and commands them to be fruitful and multiply.

After the flood, God blesses Noah and his sons with the same command.

God promises Abraham that he will become the father of many nations.
