Saint Andrew was one of the twelve Apostles and the brother of Saint Peter. Originally a fisherman from Galilee, Andrew was first a disciple of Saint John the Baptist before recognizing Jesus Christ as the Messiah. After encountering Christ, Andrew immediately brought his brother Peter to Him, becoming one of the first called to follow the Lord.
Throughout Christ’s ministry, Andrew faithfully accompanied the Savior and witnessed His miracles, preaching, death, and Resurrection. After Pentecost, Andrew traveled widely proclaiming the Gospel and converting many to the Christian faith. Tradition holds that he preached in regions around Greece and Asia Minor, enduring persecution for the sake of Christ.
Andrew ultimately suffered martyrdom in Patras after refusing to cease preaching the Gospel. According to tradition, he was bound to an X-shaped cross, now commonly called Saint Andrew’s Cross. Even during his suffering, Andrew continued preaching and encouraging the faithful until his death, giving heroic witness to his love for Christ.
