King David was the second king of Israel and one of the most important figures in salvation history. As a young shepherd, he was chosen by God and anointed by the Prophet Samuel to rule His people. David first became renowned for defeating the giant Goliath through faith in the Lord, demonstrating that victory comes from God rather than human strength.
After succeeding King Saul, David united the tribes of Israel, established Jerusalem as the capital of the kingdom, and brought the Ark of the Covenant into the city. He was known as a warrior, leader, musician, and poet, traditionally credited with composing many of the Psalms. Though he committed serious sins, David repented sincerely and sought God’s mercy, becoming an enduring example of repentance and trust in the Lord.
God made a covenant with David, promising that his kingdom would endure and that a future king from his line would reign forever. This promise was ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of David and the promised Messiah.
