Saint Eleazar Maccabee was one of the Seven Holy Maccabean Brothers who suffered martyrdom during the persecution of the Jewish people under King Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Together with his brothers and their mother, Solomonia, Eleazar refused to abandon the Law of God, even when threatened with brutal torture and death.
The king sought to force the brothers to violate God’s commandments and embrace pagan customs. Yet Eleazar remained steadfast, choosing fidelity to the Lord over earthly life. The Maccabean brothers encouraged one another to endure suffering with courage, trusting that God would reward those who remained faithful. Their witness demonstrated extraordinary perseverance and hope in the resurrection of the righteous.
The martyrdom of Eleazar and his brothers became one of the most celebrated examples of faithfulness in the Old Testament. Their sacrifice inspired future generations to remain loyal to God in times of persecution and foreshadowed the witness of the Christian martyrs.
