Saint Peter, originally named Simon, was one of the first disciples called by Jesus Christ and became the leader of the Twelve Apostles. A fisherman from Galilee, Peter left everything to follow Christ after being called to become a “fisher of men.” Throughout the Gospels, he appears as a prominent spokesman for the apostles and one of Jesus’ closest companions.
Peter witnessed many of the most important events of Christ’s ministry, including the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus’ daughter, and Christ’s agony in Gethsemane. He famously professed that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” after which Christ declared that He would build His Church upon Peter and entrusted to him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Although Peter denied Jesus three times during the Passion, he sincerely repented and was restored by the risen Lord. After Pentecost, he became the principal leader of the early Church, boldly preaching the Gospel and guiding the Christian community. According to ancient Christian tradition, Peter eventually traveled to Rome, where he was martyred for his faith during the persecution under Emperor Nero.
