The Sabbath Day was established by God as a sacred day of rest, worship, and remembrance. After creating the heavens and the earth in six days, God rested on the seventh day and blessed it, setting it apart as holy. The Sabbath became a sign of the covenant between God and His people, reminding them that all creation belongs to Him and that true rest is found in His presence.
For the people of Israel, the Sabbath was observed from sunset on the sixth day to sunset on the seventh day. During this time, ordinary labor was set aside so that families and communities could devote themselves to worship, prayer, and reflection upon God’s goodness. The Sabbath also served as a memorial of Israel’s liberation from slavery in Egypt, reminding the people that they belonged to God rather than to earthly masters.
The Sabbath teaches the importance of trusting God, honoring Him with time set apart for worship, and recognizing that human worth does not depend solely on work or productivity. In Christian understanding, the Sabbath foreshadows the deeper spiritual rest found in God and the eternal rest promised to the faithful.
