The Struggle recalls Jacob’s mysterious wrestling match with God’s messenger near the ford of the Jabbok. On the night before he was to meet his brother Esau, whom he feared after years of separation, Jacob remained alone and wrestled until daybreak with a heavenly being (Genesis 32:22–32). Though wounded in the struggle, Jacob refused to let go until he received a blessing. As a result, his name was changed to Israel, meaning “one who strives with God.”
This event symbolizes perseverance in faith, spiritual endurance, and the transformation that comes through encountering God. Jacob entered the struggle fearful and uncertain, but emerged blessed and renewed. The story teaches that faithful perseverance through trials can lead to deeper trust in God and spiritual growth.
