Saint Peter, the chief of the Apostles, sealed his witness to Jesus Christ through martyrdom in Rome. After boldly preaching the Gospel following Pentecost (Acts 2:14–41), Peter endured persecution, imprisonment, and hardship for the sake of Christ. According to ancient Christian tradition, during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Nero, Peter was condemned to death and crucified.
Tradition holds that Peter requested to be crucified upside down because he did not consider himself worthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. Through his martyrdom, Peter demonstrated unwavering faith, humility, and love for Christ. His sacrifice became a powerful testimony to the truth of the Gospel and inspired generations of Christians to remain faithful in times of suffering.
