Saint Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ (Matthew 10:2–4). He is commonly identified with Nathanael, whom Jesus praised as “an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit” (John 1:47). After being introduced to Jesus by Philip, Bartholomew came to believe that Christ was the Son of God and the King of Israel (John 1:45–49).
Following the Resurrection and Pentecost, Bartholomew joined the Apostles in proclaiming the Gospel. Christian tradition holds that he preached in various regions, bringing many people to faith in Christ. Because of his steadfast witness, he eventually suffered martyrdom rather than deny the Lord he served.
Saint Bartholomew is remembered for his sincerity, faith, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel, even in the face of persecution and death.
