The Tongues of Fire recall the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost. As the disciples gathered in prayer after Christ’s Ascension, the Holy Spirit descended upon them in the form of tongues as of fire resting on each of them (Acts 2:1–4). Filled with the Spirit, they began proclaiming the mighty works of God in various languages.
This event marked the birth of the Church’s public mission. The Apostles, once fearful and uncertain, were transformed into bold witnesses of the Gospel. The tongues of fire symbolize the presence of the Holy Spirit, divine power, purification, wisdom, and zeal for evangelization.
Pentecost revealed God’s desire to gather people of every nation into His Church and empowered believers to continue Christ’s mission throughout the world.
