Saint Methodius was a Byzantine missionary, bishop, and theologian who, together with his brother Saint Cyril, brought Christianity to the Slavic peoples during the ninth century. Recognizing the importance of proclaiming the Gospel in the language of the people, the brothers developed the first Slavic literary tradition and translated Scripture and liturgical texts into Old Church Slavonic.
As Archbishop of Great Moravia, Methodius endured opposition and imprisonment but remained faithful to his mission. His perseverance helped establish Christianity among many Slavic nations and laid the foundation for their religious and cultural development.
Methodius is honored as one of the great missionaries of the Church and a bridge between Eastern and Western Christianity. His life reflects dedication to evangelization, education, and the accessibility of God’s word to all peoples.
St. Methodius (along with his brother St. Cyril) was canonized by Pope Leo XIII on September 30, 1880. Later, in 1980, Pope John Paul II declared the brothers co-patrons of Europe.
