Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was a Native American Christian known for her deep faith, purity, and devotion to Jesus Christ. Born in the seventeenth century among the Mohawk people, she survived a smallpox epidemic that left her with impaired vision and facial scars. After learning about Christianity from missionaries, Kateri embraced the Catholic faith and was baptized at the age of twenty.
Despite facing misunderstanding and opposition from some members of her community, she remained steadfast in her commitment to Christ. Kateri devoted herself to prayer, acts of charity, and a life of holiness, becoming known for her humility and love of God. After moving to a Christian mission community, she continued to grow in virtue until her death at a young age.
Often called the “Lily of the Mohawks,” Kateri is remembered as a witness to faith, perseverance, and holiness. She became the first Native American saint canonized by the Catholic Church.
