Saint Edmund Campion was an English Jesuit priest, scholar, and martyr who lived during the religious persecutions of the sixteenth century. Originally a brilliant academic at Oxford, he later embraced the Catholic faith and joined the Society of Jesus. He was ordained as a priest and sent on mission to England during a time when Catholicism was outlawed under Queen Elizabeth I.
Campion traveled secretly across England, ministering to Catholics and encouraging them in their faith. He wrote and defended Catholic teaching while constantly risking arrest. Eventually captured, he was imprisoned, tortured, and executed in 1581. Even under extreme pressure, he refused to renounce his faith or betray others who assisted him.
He is remembered as one of the most courageous English martyrs, a symbol of fidelity to conscience and commitment to Christ despite persecution.
St. Edmund Campion was canonized on October 25, 1970 by Pope Paul VI.
