Golgotha, also known as Calvary, is the place outside Jerusalem where Jesus Christ was crucified. The name Golgotha means “Place of the Skull.” It was there that Jesus willingly offered Himself for the salvation of the world, fulfilling the mission for which He had come.
At Golgotha, Jesus was crucified between two criminals, forgave His persecutors, entrusted His mother to the beloved disciple, and ultimately gave His life on the Cross. His sacrifice became the central event of Christian salvation history, reconciling humanity with God through His death and resurrection.
Today, the traditional site of Golgotha is contained within Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the holiest places in Christianity. Pilgrims from around the world visit to pray and reflect on Christ’s Passion and redeeming love.
Golgotha symbolizes sacrifice, redemption, forgiveness, and God’s victory over sin through the Cross of Christ.
