Saint Damian was an early Christian physician and martyr who is traditionally honored alongside his brother, Saint Cosmas. The brothers practiced medicine as an act of Christian charity and refused payment for their services, earning the title Anargyroi (“the silverless”). Their care for the sick was accompanied by a strong witness to the Gospel, leading many people to faith in Christ.
According to ancient tradition, Cosmas and Damian used their medical knowledge to help the suffering regardless of wealth or status. Their generosity and dedication reflected Christ’s compassion for the sick and needy. During the persecutions of Christians under the Roman Empire, they remained steadfast in their faith and ultimately suffered martyrdom rather than deny Christ.
Saint Damian is remembered as an example of selfless service, mercy, and unwavering fidelity to the Christian faith.
