Saint Moses the Black, also known as Moses the Ethiopian or Moses the Strong, was a fourth-century monk, desert ascetic, and martyr. Before his conversion, he lived a violent life and was known as a robber and gang leader. After a profound encounter with the Christian faith, he repented, entered a monastic community in the Egyptian desert, and devoted himself to prayer, fasting, humility, and spiritual discipline.
Over time, Moses became renowned for his wisdom, gentleness, and holiness. His life is one of the most powerful examples of repentance in Christian tradition, demonstrating that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. He frequently taught humility and mercy, often reminding others of their own need for forgiveness before judging their neighbors.
Near the end of his life, raiders attacked the monastery where he lived. Refusing to take up arms, Moses chose to remain with his fellow monks and was killed, receiving the crown of martyrdom.
