The Titulus Crucis (“Title of the Cross”) is a revered Christian relic traditionally identified as part of the inscription that Pontius Pilate ordered to be placed above the head of Jesus during His Crucifixion. According to the Gospel accounts, the inscription proclaimed Jesus as “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews” and was written in Hebrew (or Aramaic), Latin, and Greek.
According to Church tradition, the relic was discovered in the fourth century by Saint Helena during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It was later brought to Rome, where it has been preserved in the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem among other relics associated with the Passion of Christ.
Whether regarded as the original inscription or as an ancient object of Christian devotion, the Titulus Crucis reminds the faithful that the One mocked as “King of the Jews” truly reigns as the King of Kings. It stands as a testimony to Christ’s Passion, His kingship, and the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation.
