St. Stephen

Card Type: Martyr | Timeline: New Testament
Overview:

St. Stephen was one of the seven deacons chosen to serve the early Christian community. (Acts 6:1–6) He was known for his strong faith and for having performed signs and wonders among the people by the power of the Holy Spirit, which drew opposition from members of various synagogues. Unable to refute his wisdom, they falsely accused him of blasphemy against Moses and God and had him arrested. Stephen delivered a powerful speech before the Sanhedrin (Acts 7), recounting Israel’s history and accusing the Jewish leaders of resisting the Holy Spirit and betraying Jesus, the Righteous One. His words enraged the council. As they dragged him out to stone him, Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, cried out as he saw a vision of Jesus standing at the right hand of God. While being stoned, Stephen prayed for Jesus to receive his spirit and asked forgiveness for his killers, just as Christ had done on the cross. He became the first Christian martyr, and his death marked a turning point, leading to increased persecution and the scattering of believers. Stephen’s martyrdom ultimately began the spreading of the Gospel beyond Jerusalem.
